Pete Humes could edit my weekly

by: Ross

Sad news — the RTD “removed” Pete Humes from Brick Weekly. The weekly is now morphing into a “life-stage, lifestyle publication.” BORING. Z!

I’ll tell you who is awesome: Pete Humes. I will also tell you who is not awesome: the RTD.

What are the odds that Humes ditches Richmond for a city that actually appreciates him? You can write snarky features for me any day of the week buddy. Maybe one day I can even pay you!

  1. You are totally right!

I thought the idea of the RTD doing an alternative rag was totally bogus and even kind of hilarious. Until they hired Pete.

Anyone who knows anything about magazines, national or local, knows you can’t expect one to make a ton of money (or even establish itself) in a year’s time. Making mags work takes time - there are some mags out there that have been around for a decade that have NEVER turned a profit. So Pete didn’t even really get a chance.

Also: As anyone in the freelance community will tell you, Brick never had a budget to adequately pay writers. Not sure what Pete was supposed to do other than write everything himself.

I wonder if the fact that the magazine was starting to comment on Richmond politics and culture had anything to do with this boneheaded decision. Some of Pete’s commentary was decidedly un-Media General.

When you need to know stuff… go elsewhere.

Seriously. The only reason I was stoked on the potential of Brick was because of Humes. I am so mega bummed right now. Sure it was thin, but it was decent and nicely put together. I was excited.

  3. They didn’t pay illustrators very well, either…although a huge corporation complaining that they can’t pay freelancers sounds right about in line with what I expect from Media General. To spend no money yet expect to be profitable in a year…what a complete joke.

We’ve getting the RTD for free for months. Recently, I called to cancel it…still, it shows up on my doorstep every single morning like the unwanted turd it is.

  4. I should add that Pete Humes is awesome, and far too talented and driven for what this lackadasical, do-nothing and support nothing city has to offer.

  5. It had bite and the RTD is so political behind the scenes that you cant be honest about things. It shrinks the landscape and that isnt good for anyone.

  6. [...] If Pete Humes has been ousted by Brick Weekly, that is NOT good. [...]
