Hawtt city council action

by: Ross

Here is a nice video of Councilman Bill Pantele discussing why the Performing Arts Center is the bees knees. At the end of the video council votes to “pass the papers” or what have you. I’m pretty sure that means another sixty quadrillion dollars funneled to wherever it goes these days. Also Pantele says “country western punk rock” (around the six minute mark) which sounds pretty awesome to me.

But seriously people “symphony, opera, and ballet?” Are we in Victorian England? Just wondering.

  1. This other clip shows councilman Tyler asking some good questions.

  2. Please note when you are watching: It turned out that there WAS no subcontractor risk, as claimed. Contrary to what Pantele kept insisting, there was no need to rush this vote to allow an amending of the agreement and so councilpeople to get feedback from their constituents. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported two days later that the bids were not in any danger of going up if council decided to take time to fully deliberate.

As far as the notion that we can thank the Virginia Performing Arts Foundation for the forthcoming re-opening of the National Theatre, you’ll notice that Mr. Pantele stops talking about that. Here’s why:

Also note when you are watching: While the city rewards VAPAF with a forty-year blank check worth $50+ million, the city refuses to give ONE DIME to Curated Culture’s First Fridays - the one (grassroots) project that has successfully rehabbed downtown Richmond when all the expensive, consultant-driven marketplaces/convention centers have failed.

Call or write your councilperson and raise hell. Or at least ask Mr. Pantele to tell you who these people are that stop him and argue that we need more “blight” in downtown Richmond.
