Geeks gone wild
RMSZero is currently ridding an internet meme over at Awkward Things I Say to Girls. Check out his post on why geeks make good lovers to see what has tens of thousands of women rushing to their nearest Computer Science department.
Memes are so interesting to me. Especially internet memes. Do you remember you first internet meme? I think the first one I remember is Hello my future girlfriend. Those were the good old days, back when the internet was for making fun of awkward kids. Oh wait.
My favorite meme is a vow of celibacy. It is incredibly detrimental to the host’s fitness, but has spread throughout hundreds of cultures for centuries. Think of how many priests (and other religious leaders/participants) that gave up their reproductive ability (thereby reducing their fitness to 0) and yet vows of celibacy continue on. It completely goes against what evolutionary theory would predict (without memes)!
They’re such an awesome way to combine cultural theories with evolutionary theory. Biological Anthropologists like me get big kicks out of that.
Another favorite theory of mine (not that came up with it, it is my favorite) is the idea of a “selfish gene”. Richard Dawkins is one smart dude.
