Neighborhood news, coming at yous
John has been on my case to start a neighborhood news blog/resource like CHPN for quite a while now. It took someone else getting excited about starting something like that for Carytown / Museum District to get me excited. Consider it: on.
The site should go live within the next few days — to preempt a certain media conglomerate’s release of a similar (yet not so similar) offering. We are launching with a limited set of features but are, like totally, into feedback. If you know about a killer feature you’d like to see included in your community blog (assuming you live over here) pleas please please let me know.
Follow the on going discussion:
- There need to be more very local community-oriented blogs
- hoodblogs, part 2
- A hoodblog is born
- Corporate “Fake Ass Blogs” vs the Grassroots
Yeah, people on the Oregon Hill Yahoo group have been asking that somebody start a blog about the Hill, and I must say I was tempted. But I don’t think I’d do a good job of (1) paying attention to news, and (2) making myself care about it enough to post it. And come on, the blog should be better than that.

in my neighborhood, instead of a website, we have an annual flyer that goes around letting everyone know to get their dogs to stop barking after 7pm. this is a free service of the HOA, which only extorts 200-300$ per year from each resident.
they use purple paper, that’s why it’s so expensive.

Can’t think of anything specifically to recomend for inclusion, but I will definately be keeping my eyes open for this.

Having the last 5 or 10 comments displayed on the front page has been great for keeping discussions going even after the initial post has dropped below the fold or even off of the front page.

and for $.02 more: Build in some space for cheap advertising. This’ll get the businesses “on your side”, and is a way to get the local flavor.

Tess, you should try to find 3-4 people that *would* be interested in the finding the news and get them involved.
TEAM WORK!????!

You neglected to say what neighborhood you are doing this for.

I guess I implied it: “Carytown / Museum District.” Generally West of the Boulevard.

i think it would be good for carver. maybe in conjunction with jackson ward, or maybe separate.
— Wolf | @
Actually it would be really really really easy to set up if you or people you knew wanted to be in charge of running it.
I also wondered if Carver was big enough to support something like this by itself or if you would need to include Jackson Ward as well.

A joint Carver-Jward site would work very well. Those areas are distinct geographically, and are and will be very dynamic.

maybe it would start out together and if it got big enough then it could split later on. i feel like there’s some sort of critical mass involved. i don’t want a blog where 3 people visit regularly. i would probably be willing to set it up if somebody could make it fairly simple / show me how to do stuff.

i am friends with a girl who is on the board (or whatever it’s called) for CACIL = Carver Area Civic Improvement League who i am sure would be all about this idea. CACIL has a VCU partnership and is supposed to be a fairly powerful player in the community. on the other hand, i don’t want to have to get board/vcu approval to recommend a restaurant or something crazy.
how should i get started? pharrout?
can i get carver.com or something?
i can put forth a little cash and i’ll make time. john, realistically, what kind of time commitment am i looking at?

I spend 10-20 2X a day checking a list of local news/blog sites. Anything relevant, I post. That is probably 80% of it, and that would be enough to have the site be useful and worth doing. I’d be doing this *anyway*.
The rest comes from people suggesting articles, doing interviews, whatever, and this can take a while. I’ve got an interview with Delores McQuinn that I’ve been sitting on because I haven’t had the time to transcribe it. But you don’t *have* to do that kind of thing, I’m just into it.
Another piece, and what works really well, is posting observations of things that are going on. For instance, noticing a good restoration near by. This took me going out and taking a picture, possibly on the way to somewhere anyway. Minutes of my time, but mostly just being aware of things. Maybe go do a small piece on that new bicycle repair shop.
If you get CACIL or other nieghborhood orgs to provide notes or a descripiton of their meeting, *they* are doing the hard part, all you have to do it proof it and post.
Ross - do y’all have a hosting hookup? // otherwise, I’ve got sites at ipowerweb and fatcow , which offer name registration and hosting for under $99/year. You could get that back in ad sales pretty easy if you were interested. I can get you some ‘for rent’ adverts immediately…
I’d be glad to help you get going technically. 1st, get a name and a hosting plan. (email Ross and see how they’ve named the new site, that might help). Then, we can arrange for time to get together and actually put it all together for you. Easy peasy…

PharrOut can do as much or as little as you want. We can definitely do hosting on the cheap, and we could probably set the whole thing up for you so all you’d have to do is provide content.
We are super busy this week and next, so it’d have to be after then. But here is a thing: we could get you a domain and hosting set up and then you could start posting content immediately . Then once things slow down over here we can make it look pretty.
Also I imagine I will learn some things about these types of sites in the next couple weeks anyway.

I’d like to do a blog just for East and West Seminary Avenue in Northside, and it shall only involve the flux of stray cats and the tendency of people to walk down the middle of the road for no reason. It’ll be called “That’s What Sidewalks Are For” or “I Have No Qualms About Crushing You, Cat And/Or Person.”
You may ignore this, Ross. I’m getting delirious from all this Oscar research.

the carver one will primarily focus on the guy that uses his yard and all the surrounding streets/alleys as his car repair shop specializing in piece-of-crap busted buicks and caddys- rent a real shop jerkface!? and the person who put up 6′ wood privacy fence around the second story of their front porch. i will probably be shot over this blog.
i kid, i kid. but, i’m going to take you guys up on some of this stuff. i have an insane week at work, though = fabulous hotel in Amelia county (aparently people go to amelia for things?). *might* be able to give it some time this weekend. meanwhile, i am compiling a list of things/features to be there.

i don’t think i’ve seen it on chpn, but i think a neighborhood history would be neat. it wouldn’t have to be anything super-elaborate or anything, but could be if someone really wanted to spend the time. just a thought.
— Wolf | @
I’ve brought in neighborhood history via book reviews, because I was looking at these books anyway.
