Boise State: National Champions
by Ross Catrow
If you didn’t watch last nights Fiesta Bowl between Oklahoma and Boise State you missed the single best football game of all time. Go download it from iTunes this very second. Or you can just wait until Disney makes a movie about it called “The Little Broncos.”
If I were a Boise State fan I’d start talking co-national championship over here.
Seriously, best. game. ever.
Oh, that must be what everyone was shouting and applauding about on my JetBlue flight. Curse you, direct TV. It was 1am and I was trying to sleep.
If ohio state gets beat I want to see the broncos as AP #1.
Also, I want to state for the record that Michigan is clearly the second best team in the nation.
I’d like to point out the use of TWO, count them TWO mythical — almost cliche — plays that BSU used to win the game over Oklahoma:
* The Hook and Lateral/Ladder
* The Statue of Liberty
They called the Hook and Lateral/Ladder on a 4th and 18!?!? AND HE HAD THE FIRST DOWN AFTER THE PASS. Honestly this was amazing. AMAZING.
MAN! I wish i had stayed up, I thought the game was in the bag, then my brother calls me early this morning telling me I missed the best game ever!
Yeah he wasn’t kidding. THE. BEST. GAME. EVER.
“After scoring the winning two-point conversion, Boise State running back Ian Johnson proposed to his girlfriend.”
From the poll page here:

Now, seriously. Come on. That’s getting a little ridiculous.
It’s getting a LOT ridiculous. Here’s some more info on the proposal:
“Moments after Johnson ended the game, he asked his girlfriend, Broncos cheerleader Chrissy Popadics, to marry him.”
1) She is a cheerleader.
2) Her last name is “Popadics.”

I mean, what happened last night? What the hell is going on?
I’m back, with more in the developing story of Hero Running Back Proposes to Girlfriend – pictures on msnbc! Apparently it was on TV, but I didn’t stay up.

it was a great game. but co-champions!? boooo. that was their only win of the season. that’s it. they’re in the WAC and out of conference schedule: utah, wyoming, oregon state, and 1aa sac state. for me, winning 1 game worth a poop (and oklahoma really wasn’t even *that* good this year!) doesn’t earn you a national championship. and their field is so ugly.
now, if i had my way, and they let a BCS-style system pick the top 8 teams for a play-off, boise would have had their shot as the #8 seed. bracket:
1. Ohio State
8. Boise State
4. LSU
5. USC
3. Michigan
6. Louisville
2. Florida
7. Wisconsin
i think that would have been an *amazing* tournament and i’d watch every game of it.
Or, i might enjoy 8 12-team conferences, each with a championship game to determine the 8-team bracket, placed at random. i’d be down with that i think.
i kind of wish michigan would have won and that florida would win and then there would be all this craziness about co-champs (or tri-champs if you like gay blue fields) and maybe would point to a play-off. but, now they’ll say it worked itself out.
NEWS FLASH CHEERLEADER BULLETIN UPDATE #4:
My friend from college who is from and lives in Boise says that she was on the same gymnastics team with Chrissy Popadics.
I need an RSS feed.
you’re starting to worry me.
I’m just trying to do some research here.
Oregon State beat USC. And Oklahoma is really a one loss team. I mean I’m just saying, winning 13 games is a big deal. And it was the best game ever.
Also, I would watch every single one of those playoff match ups too, that would have been amazing football (except louisville would get destroyed).
yeah, i’m impressed with their season, and going undefeated is a big deal, but they just haven’t proven to me that they are the best team in the country. but that’s just me.
No I hear you. I just wish that they had a chance to prove it via … PLAYOFF!!
Sigh maybe one day. How long is the current BCS contract? 2k9? 2k12?
“they just haven’t proven to me that they are the best team in the country. but that’s just me.”
I mean, sure. It sucks that this matters, though.
Here is what people are saying to disagree with this point of view, btw:

“If there was a playoff, Boise State would not be playing in a prime-time game against Oklahoma on New Year’s night. The teams would have met in the first round, on a weekend afternoon, in some place like Houston or Jacksonville, surrounded by other games, just another pairing in a bracket.”
Because when George Mason beat UConn on a weekend afternoon to get to the final four this year, it was just another pairing in a bracket.
BTW FYI I am arguing in favor of a playoff, i just wanted to make sure we are all familiar with why people don’t want one. FTW.
the way i had it, they were going to play ohio state. i’m pretty sure people would watch. i think the reason that that argument is dumb (or the biggest of many), is that basketball has a 64 team bracket, while football would likely have 8. that’s huge. not to mention that basketball games in general don’t matter that much bc they play 80billion. i thought george mason got a ton of attention over that?
also, i would say this. if boise state got knocked off in the first round, then that’s about the amount of attention they deserved in the first place. but for some reason in our current system they should be co-champs? the playoff is the way for less-known teams to get a shot. look at the BCS games- if you aren’t in a BCS conference, you’re probably screwed.
also, sure, keep your gaylord hotels bowl if you want, i don’t care. let half the teams play a bowl game for some corporate money before the playoff. talking about some crappy game in a bracket that nobody watches. if he honestly thinks those teams played as hard for or cared as much as if that was for a shot at the title, he’s kidding himself.
it’s so fitting that the LA times wrote that- “we don’t need a winner, it’s all about feelings.”
anyway, whatever, i’m probably just talking to other people that also want a playoff anyway.
All I’m gonna say is, Div I-AA playoff games are rowdy, tons of fun, and amazing.
Unfortunately, sometimes your team loses in the first round when they had the game won and you spend the night crying and curled up in the fetal position.
I’m super all for a playoff no matter what sport or level. And I couldn’t care less about the money they lose out on, it’s worth it.
who is definitely not the national champion: stupid-face overrated notre dame. what a beat-down, i love it.
Dude could they have less of an offense and less of a good team!! HA forty one points in your face.
Oh man what a great day.
