Wii: Forecast channel impressions
I woke up this morning greeted by the pulsating blue glow of my Wii telling me that I had a message. Turns out it wasn’t midas sending me another Civil War general Mii, but it was Nintendo letting me know that the Forecast Channel was available for download!
I’ve only had about five minutes to play with it — since it took twenty to download. Aside: is everyone else’s Wii exceedingly slow to connect to the i-net? Mainly the Wii Store? Seriously that thing takes for. ev. er.
Anyway, the Forecast Channel lets you pick your State/City and then gives you a pretty generic view of today’s weather. Other options include: tomorrow’s forecast, 5-day forecast, and UV index (wtf?).
The coolest part about the Forecast Channel is The Globe. The Globe gives you a weather map ON A GLOBE. You can zoom out, zoom in, and spin it around. I’m not really sure why you would need to check the weather in Moscow on a moments notice, but it is neat and fun.
Also, I thought downloads were supposed to happen automatically in the middle of the night with this crazy WiiConnect24 business?

Yeah, mine takes forever on the Store too. I’m really angry that I didn’t even look at Forecast this morning before work…I went straight to Zelda. Frick.
We need to be Wii friends.

I usually don’t have much trouble with the store. It takes a bit to load the app, but after that it’s smooth enough.
I didn’t look at my blue pulsing glow before work but now I want to rush home and see it immediately!!
Also, you guys should play with the photo channel. It is super duper sweet!
PS-Rayman Raving Rabbits is a fun game.

You’re telling me there are Wii channels and Wii networking features in addition to the games?
Now I’m almost glad we couldn’t find a Wii this past weekend; clearly, once this thing enters our home, I’ll never see my husband again…

takes forever for mine to load as well. i mean it is just a webpage with jpgs and text, i dont know what is so hard about that. in fact, you can browse it in firefox if you change your useragent to the wii’s.
anyways, it sucks.
i am excited about the weather though?!

wtf my brain just exploded.
i tried to get the browser this morning but i couldnt connect to the shop. sat on the connection screen for 35 minutes, according to the wii msg board.

Wii and the internet?!?! Goodbye bathing and leaving the sofa!

Dude it is awesome. I will have some thoughts up later today I think.
Mine sat at the connection screen for a while, then I unplugged it and got right into the store. It took probably 30 minutes to download the thing though. FOREVER.

i wonder how long it will take to fill up that 512mb flash.
also, i have read anecdotal reports of changing your router’s channel from 6 (usually the default) to 1 or 11 and that having a big impact on the store. but my connection tests always run fine, so i dunno. seems to be just the store. i’ll try it though.

I’ve found that my first connect to the store almost always fails, and then the second one goes through fine.
I am also wondering if it is their server that is just getting pounded.

i think it is the time you guys are connecting. doing something when a lot of other wii users are doing the same can have a huge affect

after changing my router channel (which should have no effect at all, according to the Scientists), i have never had a problem again.
