Add another one to the list shitty things that bring press to Richmond. Thanks, thanks a lot for this one Senator. Feckin’ Daily Show even.
While I think that the odds of the Senator even knowing “macaca” is a European racial slur are pretty low, the whole situation sure hasn’t done anything for public image of Virginia. I guess for me it is more like “wtf is he talking about” rather than “OMGBUMMERTRON ALLEN IS A RACIST.”

I was just told about this from a friend. Its just terrible all around.
Recently the governor of Mass. referred to Boston’s “Big Dig” as a “tarbaby,” a racially insensitive remark. [See time.com for an article on this].
Its unfortunate that “Richmond” got tagged with the line on the Daily Show, too. Can’t Mayor Wilder do something?!?
haha at work recently we used the word “tarbaby” to refer to part of a project. i dunno, when i hear tarbaby i think of brer rabbit, which i guess was pretty racist in an aunt jemima sense. does it also have something to do with lynching or something?
the part that is worse that he said (to me) is the WELCOME TO AMERICA, BROWNIE part. but you know me, i won’t pretend to be impartial when it comes to my buddy gallen. :)
I mean if you are brownish, you can’t possibly be from America. That would be ridiculous.
Yeah, it’s the “Welcome to America!” that gets me…I hate that crap.
I went to a wedding with an Indian friend of mine last month and people kept asking her where she was from – she grew up and still lives ten minutes away from the church the wedding was at in NoVa. I was annoyed but she said, that was nothing – a couple months ago a paitent at the office that she works told her that her English was “almost” perfect. Gag.
