Mark Warner Makes Campaign Stop in MMORPG

by: midas

Here’s some MLP (Mindless Link Propogation) for you. Former governor Mark Warner and possible 2008 Presidential candidate made a campaign stop in Second Life, the MMORPG (massively-multiplayer-online-role-playing-game) which I know almost nothing about, but which always seems to have mildly famous people showing up in it.

This kind of blew my mind - it may blow yours when you see his absurd Avatar. Pictures Galore.

Is this bumping Howard Dean’s “successful” Internet campaign strategies up a notch? I think that the problem that these politicians fail to realize that for all the hype you build up on the Internet, people on the Internet simply don’t vote - especially not MMORPG people. Besides, half the time when the Internet loves you, they really think you are stupid and they are just being trolls.

Remember: the Internet never laughs with you. At. Always at.

Reasons not to move to Delaware

by: Ross

  1. We’re in … Delaware. When Wayne’s World came out (I’ve never seen Wayne’s World btw) I lived in Delaware. My friends thought that the producers of WW made a different version of the movie for each state: “We’re in … Michigan,” “We’re in … Texas”, etc. They didn’t realize that Delaware is a trash hole.
  2. Delaware’s nickname: The First State. They are clever up there.
  3. Don’t trust a state you can’t label clearly without sticking the name out in the Atlantic Ocean.
  4. It’s not even the smallest state.
  5. The Eastern Shore could kick Delaware’s ass.
  6. Delaware was a slave state that remained in the Union. A hotbed of hypocrisy and slavery if you ask me. Because that is what the Civil War was about, slavery, duh.
  7. Delaware contains 20% of the tolls on I-95 but only 1% of the miles.
  8. Sales tax is not a reason to relocate.

I saw Saw.

by: Ross

I don’t know how you can resist a movie with a tagline like See Saw, I certainly couldn’t (at least I couldn’t resist it on Netflix). You have to have some major marketing cajones to go to press with such a succinctly punny tag. MY HAT IS OFF TO YOU LION’S GATE.

Saw is intense, like Se7en times two, like, 4ourteen or some shit. It’s like the new Se7en for those who aren’t fazed by that crazy hooker + medieval knife scenario, you know, the kids these days. As we’ve rolled along as a society I guess we’ve built up a tolerance to horror movies, so each and every subsequent horror movie must contain more gore, creep, and scares per square minute to keep up (with the kids these days).

Saw follows the same premise set down by Se7en — which is perhaps a premise set down by someone else: killer devises intricate and deadly scenarios to teach people with “problems” a “lesson.” Many people die in the process. It is a good premise and this instance is not without *twists*. Worth a netflix if you’ve got it.

The movie maintained a high level of Scarocity™ while not turning into a snuff film (which according to that wikipedia article, the existance of snuff films may just be an urban legend). Recent movies have resorted to the ol’ hey-I-am-scary-because-I-am-basically- depicting-the-realistic-torture-slash-murder-of-a-human-being trick — The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) I’m looking in your direction. So good work Saw

I will say that I rarely see movies in theatres these days but if I do there is a good chance I’ll be watching a horror flick. There is something awesomely painful about willing submitting to a horror movie for a couple of hours in a big dark room.

So with that, here are some films that I enjoy and can call to mind at the moment:

  • Se7evn
  • Slugs
  • Misery
  • The Ring
  • The Shinning
  • House of 1000 Corpses
  • The Devil’s Rejects
  • 28 Days Later
  • Descent
  • Saw

PS. who is excited about Saw II and Saw III!?!??!

Reasons not to move to Texas

by: Ross

  1. They think they are part of the South
  2. This movie
  3. It is hot *and* humid
  4. Everything is apparently bigger there
  5. This overhead view of Houston
  6. Their barbecue sauce is basically a tomato
  7. Texas is where families find hope, where wings take dream

Macacagate.

Add another one to the list shitty things that bring press to Richmond. Thanks, thanks a lot for this one Senator. Feckin’ Daily Show even.

While I think that the odds of the Senator even knowing “macaca” is a European racial slur are pretty low, the whole situation sure hasn’t done anything for public image of Virginia. I guess for me it is more like “wtf is he talking about” rather than “OMGBUMMERTRON ALLEN IS A RACIST.”

Although he did have a lynching noose Olde Timey Noose in his office once …

RICHMOND: It is awesome.

by: Ross

Found over at Double Vision.

And yes, I know, “if I love Pennsylvania so much, I can go back there.” But I can love Richmond, too. I love the women with the same blond helmet bob who wear twelve silver bracelets at once and have beribboned and monogrammed purses and never leave the house without makeup and a manicure. I love the old men who call me “girlie” and “honey” and let me cut in front of them at the grocery store just because I am young and cute. I love the history of this place and am fascinated by the contradiction of its insular nature and the people who just randomly and genuinely ask and truly want to know if you are having a good day. This has been my home for almost nine years, and I don’t plan on leaving it any time soon.

CYCLING: It is awesome.

by: Ross

So this Sunday I rode fifty miles on a bicycle. Which I feel is pretty crazy because it makes me goal of cycling to Williamsburg seem realistic and doable. At the same time it made any thoughts I had of cycling to the beach pedal off into the sunset(ha!). Ah well.

In addition to longer rides on Sundays I am riding between 10-20 miles on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7am. The Tuesday ride is a slower paced All Ages ride while the Thursday ride is intended to be a little faster paced (although this isn’t always so).

Consider this your open invitation to come out and join us at 7AM. We meet in the parking lot behind 1205 W. Main St and usually have at least three riders — we’re looking for more though! We leave promptly at 7, so be there or be square and sad and lonely.

PS. I made a pirate-esque typo above, but I think I will keep it in there.

  • All articles must give equal time* to two (2) sides of the issue, no more, no less
  • If an issue has more than or less than two (2) sides, the author must fabricate another side, or ignore or deny the existence or validity of any extraneous ones

  • All articles must link to Wikipedia at least once (1ce) as an authoritative source

Some examples of offending articles:

  • An article about your favorite food, unless it is everyone else’s favorite food as well
  • A movie review where you express an opinion on the quality or enjoyability of the movie in question
  • An article about your vacation, unless your vacation inspired a scholarly article about the place you visited, and then you post the scholarly article instead
  • An article about a political issue where you advocate a certain position, or reference an external article that advocates a certain position

All articles that fail to meet all of these criteria will be removed without notice, or stripped of all offending content, depending on the (admittedly) transient whims of the editors. Vote on the Gay Marriage Amendment

by: Ross

Jim Bacon has a great post with some great comments on the proposed Gay Marriage Amendment to the Virginia Constitution. And OMG Jim is a republican and wants to “uphold the institution of marriage” but still finds the language of the amendment disturbing.

So even if you don’t care about voting for your local and regional officials this November you should still come out and vote on this amendment.

Taylor Behl: Fawley enters plea

by: Ross

Full story here.

The interesting bits:

The judge in Mathews County Circuit Court ordered him to serve 30 years. The judge also agreed to drop unrelated child pornography charges.

Benjamin Fawley, 39, entered an Alford plea. That means he’s not admitting guilt but acknowledging that prosecutors had enough evidence to convict him in the slaying of Taylor Behl in September 2005.

It sounds to me like he got off easy.
