The new Top500 List is out.
VT ranks in at 28th, still top 30!!
It seems that whenever chaps up in Washington get bored they like to get into meaningless debate on two amendments to the Constitution (quick searched in my FireFox as “usac” because I am awesome): gay marriage (becoming less meaningless?) and flag burning.
The Daily Press is running an article about Democratic hopeful James Webb. Webb says he would vote against the proposed flag burning amendment — if he actually were a Senator of course. The full text of the amendment:
The Congress shall have power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States.
Hey check this out, as I was RTFA I read this:
“This is yet another example of deliberately divisive politics that distract Americans from the real issues that are facing our country,” Denny Todd said.
She linked the flag-burning amendment with the recent move to prohibit gay marriage as being among those divisive issues.
Agreed. Also, if this proposed amendment picks up speed you can expect regular flag burnings at my house or maybe we will do them in a park somewhere.
Some other other Virginians’ thoughts.
Update:
On Monday, Maura and I finally got out to see An Inconvenient Truth up at Potomac Mills with our good friends Jon and Ingrid. They are soon to be moving out to California, where Jon is going to study for his PhD in Oceanography, so they were excellent people to go see this particular movie with.
If you haven’t gone to see it, you should. It may very well not be playing near you, in which case you could always download it illegally off of the internet, not that I am advocating that. It is a pretty entertaining movie which boils down to basically an engaging lecture on the global warming situation, its causes, evidence, and consequences. It has a teensy bit of Al Gore biography in it, but it isn’t really an advertisement for him - if anything, it’s an advertisement for Apple Keynote. Go see it!
But this article isn’t really about the movie at all. In fact, if you are the kind of person who doesn’t believe in science or in personal responsibility, it doesn’t really have to be about global warming either. At the least, this is an article about how to save money. Add some idealism, and it could be an article about how to reduce the United States’ dependence on foreign oil. And if you are one of those lucky few who does believe in anthropogenic climate change, well, here is how to save the world.
This is important and exciting news. Meta-news, really. Virginia is finally in the news for something good.
No mention of our ridiculous lawmakers embarassing themselves, no mention of the CSA to help the readers find us on a map, nothing but good old fashioned math news.
Congrats to Gaurav!
Did you?
UPDATE:
James Webb, a former Reagan administration Navy secretary who left the Republican Party over the Iraq war, won the Democratic nomination Tuesday to take on GOP Sen. George Allen in the fall.
Webb defeated lobbyist and longtime Democratic Party activist Harris Miller after a bruising primary in which voters decided between a traditional and unabashed liberal (Miller) and a former Republican (Webb) whose populist campaign was aimed at so-called Reagan Democrats — namely, rural, white moderates.
Real time results here — this link may die in a few days, btw.
So Tuesday is an election day here in Virginia. The Democrats’ primary election is on the 13th (Tuesday), which means it is time to decide who will be running against the eminent George Allen and the plucky Gail the Rail Parker.
As a disclaimer, it is a well-known fact that I hate George Allen - for carrying a football around everywhere he goes because his daddy was a famous coach, because of his ridiculous form letters (he once told me that he supports the right of Americans to fly the American flag - so brave!), and because he loves to tow the party line, one time arguing that “compromise” had no place in a democracy. So if this article is colored by my insatiable desire to “vote for the other guy (or girl),” please forgive me.
By now, three years ago today, I would have been married. It turns out I am still married — happily even.
Valerie is the best person I’ve ever met and I’m very lucky that she chose me out of a long line of willing suitors. I imagine it is quite a sad existence that other HU-mans live without her by their sides.
If I had a beer right now, I would drink one for you. I love you. Make sure you keep smiling — it makes me happy.

Full story here. The whole thing kind of bums me out. I can easily see Gotham turning into nonstop hot girl-on-bat action. I mean sure comic books are full of sex I just hope they don’t use teh hott chixx as a crutch for a good plot.
Also this Silver Age Batwoman picture is awesome.
