Virginia Tech and University of Richmond announce joint Degree

Basically you go to VT for three years and then UR for three years. You end up with a Bachelor of Science in any major offered by the VT College of Science and a Juris Doctor from UR’s T.C. Williams School of Law. Here is the awesome part: you also graduate with a “certificate of specialization in intellectual property law.” Sweet!

Apropos to this conversation we had a while ago. Another great thing happening in Virginia public education.

  1. Great. Now the University of Richmond gets to practically steal science majors from Virginia Tech, many of whom could have probably gotten in somewhere else that would be MUCH better at IP law, like George Mason or George Washington University.

I think this is good for one school: University of Richmond. It’s not in VT’s best interest. The students would be better served taking the 7 years, going to a top 50 law school, and picking up a real IP certification - and if they can only get into U of R, maybe that’s cool, but at least they’d have a shot of something better.

  2. Really? I think it seems pretty cool. Working together and partnerships are good?
