Plumbing
Last night I (with the help of some amazing bros) I dug a five foot by 3 foot hole. This is easily the biggest hole I have ever dug. If you listen closely you can hear Chinese people on the other side. At the bottom of the hole is a pipe with a crack in it. If you are a plumber or know a plumber who will actually return my phone calls please send an email to MaxPower [at] haduken [dot] com. That would be awesome.
Until I figure this out, I may be MIA for a while.
Sounds like the city is saying its your fault. Sorry to hear my man. Good Luck!

1. what is the pipe made of?
2. are we talking hairline fracture or the pipe is busted open?
3. do you think the city damaged the line when they replaced the main?
i know a guy that knows a guy that would fix it. however, he’s a crazy canadian with no real work permit, so everything has to be under the table. he’s supposed to be really good though if you’re interested in taking jobs from americans and whatnot.
you probably won’t like this idea, but my boss suggested replacing the entire line from the meter to the shut-off inside your house. because if the pipe has reached its max life, then you patch it, it will probably just bust somewhere else. you have to decide if you’re willing to risk that. all this is sortof dependant on what the existing pipe is made of and if the city just broke it, then maybe the rest of it is A-OK.

Umm yeah everyone in the world suggests replacing the whole pipe. Especially since the sidewalk is dug up at the moment. The thing is we need water in our house. So we need to get this fixed temporarily. Maybe? Tomorrow I will talk to the guy about redoing the whole pipe. I feel like through a plumber it will cost a million dollars.

bossman here seems to think you could do it yourself. even if you dug the ditches and ran all the pipe (possibly with flexible copper, 1 pipe with bends, no joints) then just had a guy make the 2 connections for you. how much can someone charge for that? my boss seems to think you could do that yourself too, but that’s up to you.
oh, also he said, just leave the existing pipe there and run the new one next to it. then you can get it all done, this guy just cuts of the water, disconnects the existing pipe at each end, connects the new, water on, done.
so, do you have water now?? don’t you have to pay for the water leaking out??
— Wolf | @
I don’t have water now. Which is why I am not paying for the water leaking out.
Honestly I have no desire to dig a 5 foot deep trench myself. I mean I can see why it would be good, and the things you are saying are exactly the thigns Elvin said last night. But I just can’t do something like that by myself. It would be like me telling your boss he could probably install linux himself. I mean I am sure he could after a couple weeks of reformating his hard drive, but it would be a pain in the ass.
It just isn’t my skill set.
— MaxPower | @
maybe you can mobilize a small army of workers from your local CVS store.
seriously though, let me know if i can help. i know nothing about plumbing but i might help you dig if you go that route. just remember to call miss utility…

i was just trying to offer you an alternative that won’t “cost a million dollars.” i guess i never saw *digging* as a skill, although i do see it as a pain in the ass (more like lower back). i happened to dig ditches all day saturday for my new underground dog fence- not fun, but anybody can dig, except mr. nice.
it doesn’t sound like you are, but if you were interested in that, i would help you and i could probably convince my 2 brothers to help also. i also have 2 cousins (strong construction workers) who would love to help if you paid them like $10 hourly. +some friends, and bam!
or if you want crazy canadian’s info, i have that. other than those things, i don’t know how else i can help you other than to say ‘good luck!’
— Wolf | @
Dude ross let me know slightly in advance, and I will be there to dig as much of a ditch as you wanted. If it’s manpower you need, we’ll get you manpower my friend.

We used Perfect Plumbing (804) 276-2385 when our plumbing went all leaky. They were fast and professional.

i will help however i can! i am in florida this weekend, but other than that let me know. i just got a new shovel for xmas that i havent used yet.
dont know any plumbers.

MaxPower you are a sissy. My water line just blew on Sunday and I already have an army of man power digging a 5 foot deep 5 foot wide 20 foot long trench dug.
I need to dig under my house and drill into my foundation through the basement. I sit in an office all day on a computer yet I have balls to pick up a shovel and dig.
ps I have never installed Linux but give me a few days and I could do that to.
pss Canada Rocks!

bump, comments stuck in spam queue.
cheers.
ps: it’s “pps,” not “pss” (postpostscript).

This sounds like the water main leading to your house. If you can find the main stopcock to your house you should be able to turn off the water.
Have a good look at the pipe to find out if it is plastic or lead?
This should be quite a simple for event the most inexperienced plumber.

I’ve got a big stopcock.
