VT @ Duke

by Ross Catrow

Saturday I went to Durham, NC for my first Hokie Road game.

45-0

It went well.

Haduken regular Fetzer and I, along with a few other friends, took the short drive down to Durham on Saturday morning for my first Hokie road game. First I’d like to thank Governor Warner for helping Tech get into the ACC, not only for the financial security it brings, but also for the extremely close (in proximity, not score) road games. It took less time to drive Duke than it takes to drive out to Blacksburg!

Drinking early

Fetzer thought he would get things off to a good start — at 6.43AM. It didn’t take long after we got on the road, don’t worry Fetzer didn’t drive, for us to start seeing Hokie fans. As we got closer and close to Durham we saw more and more Hokie fans. In fact, we didn’t see any Duke fans until we took the Durham exit, and then we saw one.

For our first tailgate without adults, I thought we did pretty good. Some things to remember for next time:

  • Cups
  • More chairs
  • More food
  • Leave earlier

Wallace Wade Stadium is small. I think it seats around thirty thousand compared to Tech’s 70k-ish. Duke loves its basketball, but I wouldn’t say the same about football. Ever since the ol’ ball coach left, things haven’t looked too good for the Blue Devils.

The early crowd

Do they even come to their own football games? I don’t know, it certainly isn’t clear from this picture. The atmosphere at the game blew me away. It was a home game. When the Devils ran out of their tunnel, you couldn’t even hear their intro music (which couldn’t hold a candle to Enter Sandman) over the chorus of “Let’s go! Hokies!”

HOKIES!

So yeah there you go. Go Hokies!!!
