Some crazy stuff going on in the world of gadgets

Hopefully at least some of this will be new to you.

I was going to post some of this in “Whoa Check this out…” but there was just so much to share.

I will begin by adding fuel to our past conversations that cell phones will take over the gadget world.
(this ended up just being a list of all cell phone news, i can’t help that it interests me)
Cell Phones

  1. It all starts with crazy amounts of storage
  2. Then we go on to Navigation.
    Here
is another story about it. And this is in case you perfer GSM.
  3. Digi TV and your cell phone (this story really amazed me)
  4. Nokia goes Open Source
  5. There is alot of debate going on right now about cell phones on airplanes, which i hope doesn’t happen just on the basis of it being anoying, but have you heard this?
  6. I couldn’t find a link for this but apparently fixed telephones in the US are going to plumet soon, now there are 70 for every 100 people, that number is estimated to drop to 40 per 100 by 2009

Computer Programming
I did not read this whole article but apparnetly this is going to revolutionize hardware developement, where revolutionize means render useless.
Turn your gaming machine into a parallel proccessing super computer with Scout.

Google
If you knew about this new stuff from Google then I hate you for not letting me know sooner: Short cachedvideos search and there is a closed caption text indexing that I can’t find a good link for.

Digi TV
Looking into upgrading your TV? DLP looks more and more atractive. Also, you better hurry up, the FCC is working hard to outdate your old analog.

Energy
Back to the old energy debate, Japan once again rocks when we do not

Wireless(less)
If homeless people aren’t enough to stop you, here is another reason not to move to the butt of America Portland. Sadly Heaven also makes the list at #39.

Cool
Hopefully coming soon to a library near you.
This kid went all out for the science fair, doesn’t he know you are just supposed to grow plants under light of various colors (or build a volcano)

Random / NonTech
Millions spent to prove water is h2o

  1. Whoa good roundup post.

Do those mapping things triangulate you using cell towers? They don’t seem to be using gps yah?

I read that nokia thing which is pretty cool because KHTML is built on the source apple releases from safari. It would have been cooler if they would have used firefox, but this is a start. Browser technology on phones needs to improve by like 50 million. At the same time though, webdesigners — myself included — need to start programing for phones. Or at least be aware of phone browsers.

I’m kind of with you on the airplane thing. I can’t imagine sitting next to some guy “WHAT? I CAN’T HEAR YOU. YEAH I’M RIGHT BY THE WING. YEAH I’M CALLING YOU FROM THE PLANE. COOL HUH? HELLO? WHAT?” that wouldn’t be annoying for 3 hours. Also I thought the *real* reason for no cellphones in planes was it screwed with the towers, not the planes.

I can’t believe we are more sucky than *both* Gary Indiana, and Wilmington Delaware. Kill me now. One day dude, when WiMax becomes a consumer product, I’m going to set that junk up in Carytown. WHO WILL BE UNWIRED THEN!

  2. i kind of feel like cell phones on planes wouldnt be a big difference. i mean right now when the random loud guy on the plane is talking to someone else on the plane, it might as well be a cell phone conversation cuz you can only hear one of them over the white noise and you cant see them or anything. i guess they dont talk about where they are, but i dunno. the thing that really annoys me is that time when the plane lands and half the plane bops out their cell phones and say “we just landed” and it echoes down the aisle as everyone says the same thing “no, we’re still in the plane etcetc”

  3. hey, on that science project—his parents made it for him–big time

    vanimal3000

  4. did you see that science project on how dangerous bb guns are? they got like 200$ of ballistics dummy gel and crap and finally proved scientifically that bb guns are dangerous.

it was disqualified because bb guns are too dangerous.

  5. yeah that is true. kids have been known to shoot their eyes out.

    RIGHT ON OUT!

  6. Nic: Awesome thing. Very very good.

Van: it actually says in the article that his brother did it for him.

The thing I’ve learned, though, is that no one really gives a crap who does what for who, ever. If you can coax a scientist into doing your project for you, you would win every time and everyone would be proud. If you coax someone into doing a thing for you at work, you get commended for building consensus and being a good team player.

  7. max- yes the real reason for no cell phones is the towers, if it were to happen, they would put picocells on the planes themselves, I didn’t post that article - my bad. Having the cell right there on the plane will also reduce the amount of interference to SETI as the phones will know they are close, and so use less power.

    nic

  8. You know what is amazing - the article on cell phone use in planes - which states that the FCC put a ban on cellphones in planes because…

    and i quote

***Meanwhile, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has asked for public comments on the possibility of lifting its restrictions, which were originally put in place because of the strain that cellphone use could put on ground-based wireless networks.***

so why are we lead to believe that cellphone use on planes may interfere with in-flight equipment?

and why the hell does the flight attendant ON EVERY DAMN FLIGHT tell me to put away my GBA before takeoff?

IT RUNS ON BATTERIES AND IS NO DIFFERENT THAN THE STUPID TV SCREENS IN THE BACK OF EACH SEAT TELLING US TO TAKE OFF THE HIGH HEELS BEFORE SLIDING DOWN THE SLIDE WHEN THE PLANE IS ON FIRE.

and they leave those on all friggin’ flight.

    sigh.

    anyone with me?

    anyone?

  9. I am totally with you.

I think we should all get a Nintendo DS so we can PLAY TOGETHER. And if we ever took a plane trip, we could play stuff across the aisle. That would be radical.

    MaxPower

  10. i hate those screens.

  11. i’m not fancy enough to know about planes with screens.

yes the real reason for no cell phones is that you are changing cell towers so quick that it strains them to keep doing the hand offs.
In a somewhat related story my father once had a gas station turn the pump he was using off because he was on a cell phone and that is *dangerous* Amazing.

max- it is funny that you are too cheap to go to a $15 sympohny but you imagine us all going out and buying DS’s and then flying somewhere together and using them. Do we also have alot of bling in this dream?
